The former Spice Girl spent two days with Retrak in Kampala last November, where she got involved in with the day-to-day running of the project, serving lunch to over 300 children and joining in a football match with a group of older street children.
Emma also joined Retrak’s staff on an outreach visit to the streets of Kampala, where she met children who are living on the street. Speaking in the Sunday Mirror last week, Emma said “It was quite intense. I found it really difficult. One of the boys I spoke to was 13 years old and said he’d been on the street for seven years. You just think “How is this happening?”
Emma met Leonard, an eight-year-old orphan who was bullied by older children but is now safe in the Retrak centre and Edwin, 12, who was brought to Retrak seriously ill after being electrocuted by a loose wire trying to shelter from the rain.
Emma travelled out to Uganda as part of Sport Relief, a Comic Relief initiative. Comic Relief has donated over £45,000 to Retrak over the last two years.
The appeal will be broadcast on Friday 19th March as part of Sport Relief’s night of entertainment, beginning at 7pm on BBC1. If you would like to help Retrak continue working with children like Leonard and Edwin please click here.
